Like Laguna Verde, Simba lake is located hight in the Andes Mountains. Simba Lake is red because of algae that developed pigments to protect themselves against the haight levels of ultraviolet radiation found at nearly 20,000 feet  (6,100meters ) above sea level. Researchers working on Simba lake study the impact of rapid climate change on lake habitat and life's adaptability in an effort to undersand the evolution of the early environments of both Mars and Earth.
